I am often asked how long in advance should I plan a big vacation. The answer may vary based on the type of trip and where you are planning, but in general a year or more in advance is not too early.
Why?
- Prices rarely drop. Most of the “deals” exist when the hotel, city, cruise is not yet near capacity. While there may be a last minute deal, it is not a good idea to count on that occurrence, especially if you are planning a dream vacation for a honeymoon, anniversary or the once-in-a-lifetime trip. Additionally, many of the resorts and cruise lines will allow you to adjust the price in the event that there is a price drop in your room category. Astute travel agents will advise in that event and you might benefit from later changes.
- Pay over Time. While some deals exist for prepayment, booking in advance often requires only a nominal down payment and the balance being due some 60-90 days before departure. Agencies will allow payment at any time prior to the balance being due. Many clients will use this to budget for their travel by making monthly payments over the year+ in advance.
- Changes. You can modify your itinerary in the event of world crisis or you change your mind about certain cities, ships, or resorts. Most travelers opt for travel insurance which generally allows changes up to 72 hours prior to departure.
- Research and Excursions. Booking the underlying trip in advance gives significant time to allow to plan for what to do while at the destination. Whether planning waterfalls, ziplining, tours of the city or what the best restaurants are the further in advance allows for you to research what is available at the ultimate destination. Moreover, excursion companies like Viator provide significant separate experiences in virtually every major city worldwide.
- Anticipation. This is one of my favorite parts of a vacation! While a last minute or surprise getaway is certainly fun, having the anticipation for a year in advance is a great way to figure out all of the fun things that you can do. Whether you are planning an island anniversary with just your spouse or a big party with friends and family, sharing the plans and dreaming of the big event is part of the fun of travel.
